To my dismay, I found out the week before I was supposed to fly out to Germany that (since January 1, 2010), Lufthansa had changed its free baggage rule to only ONE free piece of checked luggage of 23 kg (~50 lbs) !!! I already had everything packed into two suitcases and now I had to pare it down to ONE. I later found out that a lot of international flights had changed the rule to only one piece of checked luggage (at least for economy class; business and first classes can still check in two pieces of luggage up to 32kg each!).
However, I may have one answer to this new stringent luggage rule. On my Lufthansa flight from Boston Logan to Germany, I had to use the bathroom once. When I did, I had to take stairs down to the lower level of the plane to use the bathroom. The lower level was very spacious and nicely furnished with 6 to 8 (I forget the exact number because it was so posh down there) rather large bathrooms! So the lower level of the plane has been taken over by spacious bathrooms and forcing passengers to sacrifice their luggage!
Though, I will admit that it was one of my better bathroom experiences on a plane and I was impressed. I’m always impressed with Lufthansa, but this time I think I flew on a newer plane, which was why things seemed even nicer.
*Disclaimer: Just in case there is a misunderstanding… of course, I am not being entirely serious about why I think they decreased the luggage allowance.
Why am I in Germany for the summer?
I am working for Deutsche Bahn (DB), the German national railway company (however, they do more than just railways), in Berlin. More specifically, I am working for DB Strategy Transport and Logistics at the DB Schenker headquarters in Berlin. DB Schenker is the freight logistics subsidary of Deutsche Bahn and it comprises of air, land, and sea freight. DB Schenker handles worldwide logistics.
The DB Schenker headquarters are located at Potsdamer Platz in the Sony Center. My group is on the 10th floor, which is the topmost floor of the Sony Center. On one side, we have great views of Berlin and, on the other side, we have views of the inside of the Sony Center.

This is the view into the Sony Center when standing next to the 10th floor elevator.
Well, if you want to see more pictures of some of the things I did in Berlin during my first week (before work started on June 7), you can look here:
